In The Loop: Analyzing K-12 student code

Code.org is a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to computer science in schools and increasing participation by women and underrepresented minorities. Our vision is that every student in every school has the opportunity to learn computer science, just like biology, chemistry or algebra. Code.org provides the leading curriculum for K-12 computer science in the largest school districts in the United States.

Middle and high school teachers use the Code.org platform to teach computer science courses that require their students to submit JavaScript and HTML/CSS projects. Currently, Code.org does not have visibility into the contents of these projects in aggregate. In order to determine the efficacy of our learning platform, we need to build a data visualization tool that allows us to understand the programming strategies used in student projects. If this project is successful, we would also like to surface the analysis to teachers for each student project so that they can provide timely feedback and can focus their efforts on instruction.  

This project challenges the participants to build a program that automatically analyzes JavaScript and/or HTML/CSS code to determine whether students implemented the expected programming concepts. An optional second stage of the project asks the participants to create a visual analysis of the data they captured and uncovered in the first stage. This analysis will be used internally at Code.org to understand the efficacy of our curriculum.
