This planning grant proposes to engage with under-resourced and/or marginalized communities that occupy buildings with Internet of Things (IoT) systems (e.g., smart buildings) to better understand the residents’ knowledge and value systems related to IoT data privacy and security. The project uses a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach to begin building the community partnerships necessary to: (1) work with members of the communities to gather early data on their data privacy knowledge, values, and needs in relation to smart building design and sustainability; (2) support a collaborative effort between the research team and community members to determine future research design and desired community outcomes for a large-scale S&CC research project proposal; and (3) identify potential research team members from these communities.
