World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
The theme for World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2017 is “Big Data for Big Impact,” with an emphasis on the role advanced analysis can play in development goals. At TASCHA, our work explores this crucial space where decisions resulting in major social change and technology intersect. For example, a TASCHA research team is working to demonstrate how Development & Access to Information plays a key role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals. Through another project, Data for Democracy, TASCHA has witnessed the positive ways in which big data has facilitated important decision making on a regional, national, and international level. Further, equipping communities to actively participate in healthy information societies is at the core of our Mobile Information Literacy project. Development & Access to Information
Access to information is a fundamental requirement that underpins the achievement of all development goals, and the role that libraries play in providing that access is critical in many places around the world. The Development and Access to Information project (DA2I) is a joint project between TASCHA and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). This project will demonstrate just how access to information (A2I) and libraries contribute to the achievement of the United Nations (UN) 2030 Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data for Democracy
As Myanmar continues its dramatic democratic transition, there is an urgent need and opportunity to elevate data and evidence-based decision making when tackling social challenges. From education and health to employment and civic engagement, the country’s civil society organizations (CSOs) and government are eagerly pursuing large-scale changes for transformative impact. These entities need good data, data analytics capabilities, and tools to make data accessible and usable by a diverse range of stakeholders, including the public. Read more >>
Mobile Information Literacy
As millions of people come online across the globe through mobile devices, mobile information literacy is vital for those who have leapfrogged from traditional media to digital devices that provide instant access to information. Mobile information literacy is necessary to help people learn how to find and evaluate the quality and credibility of information obtained online, understand how to create and share online information effectively, and participate safely and securely. Mobile information literacy is critical to help people better consume, generate, and disseminate trustworthy information through both digital and traditional media. Read more >>
